What am I doing wrong when it will not let me put in any lettering and tells me I am out of limits

Sounds like a setting is out of whack. Sometimes it´s obvious to spot it once you look for it, sometimes it´s not, in which case you may want to just reinstall. If you want to look for it before going through the reinstall, make sure you know whether you´re in inches or mm, then go through every setting on the ribbon to see if there´s anything out of place, like an exact zero somewhere, or too big a setting, ie. size, etc.
